This is a super light red which is almost Rosé. It drinks like the Rosé's of nearby Tavel and is also made from Grenache, with a touch of Cinsault. If you want a chillable organic red to drink with a variety of foods or on its own, this is the one.
About Domaine Wilfried
The estate is run by brother and sister, Wilfried and Réjane Pouzoulas. Their family have been making wine in the town of Rasteau in the Southern Rhone for five generations. Their wines fall within the Côtes du Rhône appellation, with some of their top wines achieving named village ‘Cru’ status such as Rasteau AOC and Cairanne AOC. Cairanne is one of the Rhone wines to watch as it has only just been officially recognized as a village AOC in 2018.
Wilfried and Réjane’s vineyards are planted with Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault, with the domaine being certified organic in 2009. They work without chemicals in the vineyard and in the winery they are using neutral vessels such as concrete to retain the purity and finesse of their wines. The only addition in the winemaking is a small amount of SO2 if the vintage requires it.
The wines are ‘Quintessentially Rhone’, they transport you to the gorgeous Mediterranean sun-drenched vineyards where herbs grow by the side of the road. The wines of Rasteau have in the past been described as ‘rustic’ by the wine press but the wines of Domaine Wilfried are quite the opposite, with an emphasis on drinkability and freshness, they are very balanced, transparent and precise.
